BOATBOY MARINE TRAINING FOUNDER AND PRESIDENT, CAPTAIN RUSS COHEN, DIES AT 46
December 7, 2009 – Captain Russ Cohen (“Capt. Russ”), founder and creator of BoatBoy Marine Training (BMT), passed away suddenly this weekend in his home. He was 46.
Capt. Russ dedicated his life to the boating lifestyle. After a lifetime of professional and personal boating experience, he realized one of the biggest issues facing the marine industry was lack of education for new boaters. He created BMT in 2001 to take boating safety to the next level and train recreational boaters. Capt. Russ designed BMT to offer the most comprehensive hands-on training to the recreational boater on their boat, at their dock, in their waterway.
Capt. Russ was passionate about boating his entire life. He grew up on the water, spending his boating seasons on various boats with his family and getting involved with the marine industry at an early age. His love of the water and boating safety was prompted by his father, Izzy, who taught him about the boating lifestyle at a young age.
In 1986, Capt. Russ obtained his license at the United States Coast Guard (USCG) Baltimore Station. He held a USCG 50 Ton Master’s Captain’s License upon near coastal waters along with a commercial assistance towing endorsement.
Prior to beginning BMT, Capt. Russ held various positions as a USCG Captain with The Charter Club, Philadelphia Water Taxi and E&B Marine (West Marine). He continued in the marine industry in the 1990´s working for Maurice Sporting Goods, Unified Marine, Outboard Marine Corporation (OMC), Lightning Jack´s Marina and C Service Marine Group, Inc. These multi-faceted positions allowed him to hone his skills and gain extensive knowledge in marketing & sales, product manufacturing, marina & dealer operations and understanding the boating business.
Capt. Russ is survived by his wife, Lois and his Mother, two Sisters and many beloved nieces and nephews.
Services for Capt. Russ will be held at the Berschler and Shenberg Funeral Home on Tuesday, December 8 at 10:30 am. The Home is located at 101 Medford-Mount Holly Road (Route 541) in Medford NJ.
